As you can see, it’s a real privilege and quite a responsibility to be able to own a firearm. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to experience our incredible outdoors safely.

Once you have passed your multi choice test administered by Mountain Safety on behalf of the NZ Police, purchased a firearm and are looking to head off into the wild blue yonder, we would encourage you to do three key things:

1. Join a club

Such as New Zealand Deerstalkers Association or a Clay bird shooting club or a Reloaders club. We will help you find one in your local area.

What’s the advantage of joining a club? 

• Hunters and shooters who belong to clubs have better safety records.

• You will meet like minded people – many people have gained lifelong hunting companions through being in a club.

• You can take advantage of the experience of other members and go on club trips. 

• Many clubs have excellent ranges that are available to members.

• Clubs act on your behalf to support hunters and shooters and fight for your rights. United we stand, divided we fall.  Joining a club is an investment in your hunting future and the good future of hunting in NZ.
