NZ Hunter Education Course:
Module 11: FISH & GAME
Fish & Game New Zealand manages, maintains and enhances sports fish and game birds and their habitats in the best long-term interests of present and future generations of anglers and hunters.
Fish & Game NZ is everyone who buys a fishing or hunting licence – we are a ‘user pays, user says’ non-profit organisation that receives no government or taxpayer money. An important difference between Fish & Game New Zealand and other public organisations is that Fish & Game is run by councils elected by the people who buy licences.
Fish and Game New Zealand is the collective brand name of the New Zealand Fish and Game Council and 12 regional Fish and Game Councils, established in 1990 to represent the interests of anglers and hunters, and provide coordination of the management, enhancement, and maintenance of sports fish and game.
The New Zealand Government expects Fish & Game New Zealand to oversee the effective management of the country’s sports fish and game resources carried out by 12 regions. To do this the Fish & Game New Zealand Council has a number of formal statutory powers.

Hunting Regulations
Fish & Game NZ provides regulations for game bird hunting throughout New Zealand. These regulations are amended each year to suit changing sporting and environmental conditions. Each region has its own set of regulations working in conjunction with the national regulations.
Please be aware of and adhere to local regulations at all times - they are designed to ensure the sustainability of game bird hunting and fishing, and the wonderful natural resource that is the New Zealand environment.
Hunters should ensure they obtain a booklet of regulations when they purchase a hunting licence.
